Dear fellow eligible voter

I know that it is tiring. Overwhelming, even. There is all this angry rhetoric and inhumanity, coming first and foremost from the president of the US—but also from those who most vehemently support or (it must be said) oppose him.

Among the president’s most subservient and vocal supporters are members and leaders of a Congress that is failing to deliver on one of its basic mandates: provide effective checks and balances to the Executive power. It is indeed confusing, and so easy to despair.

But the solution is really simple: Please vote! In fact, please vote Democrat. Even if you are a non-affiliated voter (like me). Or you like a third party. Or you are a moderate Republican. This mid-term election is not only about policy—it is first and foremost about a return to civility and normalcy.

The Democratic Party is far from perfect. But it is currently our only option to stop a tailspin into pettiness, intolerance, and, ultimately, autocracy.

After the election, with the Republican majorities terminated in the House and the Senate, there will be the opportunity (and, in fact, the moral imperative) to reform our political system. I will make that argument consistently, as will others. And so should you.

But we cannot use much needed future political reform as an excuse for inaction, absenteeism, or an ineffective protest vote. Serve locally, as a volunteer, as an elected officer, as a positive role model.

And, this November 6: Please vote! In fact, please vote Democrat.
