2024: A closing pre-election reflection

See Disclaimer.

Given the weight of the US in the world, this might be the most consequential election in global modern history. Much has been said and written already (including by me: https://outoftheboxblog.org/2024/11/04/why-do-i-vote-why-should-you and links therein). Now, it all comes down to Americans’ answers to two key questions.

Why should we vote?
Personally, I vote because both my wife and I lived once under (different) dictatorships. Because, in democracy, every voice counts. Because once lost, democracy is terribly difficult to regain. And because I owe it to my young grandkids to speak and vote on their behalf—in defense of principles, democracy, and the next generations’ right to a sustainable Earth.

Who should we vote for?
Personally, I vote for country, world, and humanity. With my grandchildren in mind. No candidate is ever perfect, but this year the choice is abundantly clear: Harris is hope, Trump is darkness.

If not, please consider:
• Harris offers an unwavering defense of democratic principles and commitment to the US Constitution. With Trump, democracy and freedom of press would be in unprecedented jeopardy.
• Harris offers responsible government and public service: a unified country; an expansion of the middle class; efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change; a culture of decency, truth, and empathy; geopolitic approaches that recognize complexities and seek opportunities for good, with successes and failures, With Trump, we should expect drama, self-aggrandizement, self-interest, and pet vengeances—but no public service.

The choice is ours. Please vote wisely.
